History
Bhutan’s history has been shaped by its Himalayan geography, spiritual traditions, and long period of isolation. Early communities were influenced by animistic and Bon beliefs before Buddhism was introduced in the 7th century and firmly established in the 8th century by Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), who remains a central figure in Bhutanese spiritual life. Buddhism deeply influenced Bhutan’s culture, values, and social structure, forming the foundation of the nation’s identity.

In the 17th century, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal unified Bhutan and established a unique system of governance that combined spiritual and administrative authority. The Wangchuck dynasty was founded in 1907, leading Bhutan into a period of stability and gradual modernization. In 2008, Bhutan became a constitutional monarchy, embracing democratic governance while preserving its traditions. Today, Bhutan is internationally respected for balancing progress with cultural preservation through the philosophy of Gross National Happiness.
